Every other week, I hold a JOURNAL CLUB. After manually filtering through the millions ofarticles out there on the web, I present a few that impacted my life this month.
Here’s our Journal Club for the week, enjoy!
- A common proverb teaches that “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” Medicine is a world where people have good intentions. Yet they fail to change a system that is broken and continues to produce burned out, depressed, and suicidal doctors. If academics are honest, we can see their final destination, look back, and realize that we helped pave the road that carried them to that destination. The Physician Philosopher hammers home the purpose of his blog and how he is trying to reshape this road our doctors travel.
- What's in YOUR wallet? Dr. McFrugal shares what's in his. Not only that, he shares what's in his phone and sock drawer, too! Learn which credit cards he regularly keeps in his wallet out of the twenty he owns total, and which he saves for specific purchases. He also specifies other essentials such as his medical license and proof of automobile insurance. Make sure your wallet is all set for every need.
- In 2012, Retire by 40 retired from his engineering career. It was the best decision he ever made, as he was miserable. After he quit, life improved tremendously and he loves early retirement. Early retirement gives you the freedom to do whatever you want. But, he thinks most people (99.999%) should keep working instead of trying to retire early since early retirement isn’t a good fit for everyone. Work gives us structure and purpose. Plus, let’s imagine what would happen if everyone retires early.
- “Learning to Fly is not much different from learning to FI. It is largely a EQ journey to a mindset that requires a little IQ mathematical skillsets and toolsets to pull off a reverse engineered life of financial sustainability and creative freedom that many inappropriately refer to as retirement.” Pivot Point MD explains how learning to “FI” is the same is jumping out of a plane and learning to “FLY” (First Love Yourself). Read more to learn about his adventure!
- On Joe Fairless's Best Show Ever Podcast, Joe has Michael Alan Tate on the show. Michael has been in career advising and business consulting for about 25 years now. Before he found his calling he was at a job he was good at but no longer had any passion for and in fact, was making him depressed. Michael went to a career counselor in search of some help because he wanted to find something different and all that did was make him more depressed because they had him apply to 150 jobs and he only had one response. He later realized it wasn’t him or his resume per se but his strategy on how to find work. He shares five solutions he uses to help many of his clients during transitions to find careers that bring them fulfillment. He also shares an amazing tip on how to network instead of the old-fashioned way.
- Dr. Frank Cusimano, PhD, has a doctorate in Nutrition and Metabolic Biology from Columbia University and is currently a medical student at the Arizona College of Osteopathic medicine. Having done his PhD on the gut microbiome, a hot topic, The Physician's Guide to Doctoring dives into the science of prebiotics, probiotics, postbiotics and antibiotics. What can we actually recommend to patients to help them with GI upset while on antibiotics? How does the microbiome influence inflammatory bowel disease? How can the gut actually influence our brains? A previous guest on the podcast discussed how the colon is the window to the soul. Turns out there’s science behind that! Check out the episode, “Cutting the Crap on the Gut Microbiome,” here now.
A little bit of motivation below. Enjoy and have a great weekend!
