Journal Club 5-10-18

Every other week, I hold a JOURNAL CLUB. After manually filtering through the millions of articles out there on the web, I present a few that impacted my life this month.

Here’s our Journal Club for the week, enjoy!

  • After letting the idea brew for a while, XRAYVSN has joined the blogging scene and is starting out strong with a series called “I Have Pretty Much Made Every Mistake In The Book…” Hearing about and experiencing failure is one of the greatest ways to learn and I'm a big fan of the lessons he's sharing in these posts.
  • Optimize Your Life has been exploring the science of happiness over the past couple of months and in this recent blog post, dives deeper into “Materialism and Happiness”. These fascinating finds might make you take a closer look at your own habits.
  • In this week's podcast, So Money, Farnoosh Torabi and Catherine Alford talk real estate investing, paying down your mortgage, and more. You can listen to the episode here. (If you listen through to the end, you might hear a name you recognize.)

A little bit of motivation below. Enjoy and have a great weekend!

  1. Thank you so much for the mention of my blog. I truly owe a great deal of its implementation because of you (your very influential post on how to start a blog served as my blueprint). I had been toying around with the idea for a couple of years (several colleagues have made comments that I need to do one given how passionate I get about financial things) but your post was the thing that lit the fuse. That very evening I committed to getting a bluehost domain and spent money. It’s amazing when you actually commit to spending on something it gives you motivation to succeed. I am so glad I started the blog. It has given me immense pleasure seeing my thoughts come to life for others to read and I particularly enjoy the comments from everyone. Met a lot of other bloggers through this process and now feel even more part of the community (which is made up of some of the most generous kind people who genuinely want to see you succeed).

  2. Xrayvsn: Congrats on the new blog! As a new blogger myself, I understand that sometimes you have to get a swift kick in the rear to get going. The 3 studs (PIMD, WCI & Pof) have also inspired me to start I also began taking a few online blogging courses and there’s more to keyword research than I ever expected! This makes me realize how much the 3 above mentioned bloggers have put into their blogs to make them the success that they are.

Regarding your “Mistakes” article, specifically Mistake #1: Not concerned with financial education throughout college, med school, residency, and early attending years. I think about this daily as I workout at the local university’s athletic center. I see these students on Facebook and texting (instead of working) and if I could only convince them to take half the time spent doing mindless tasks and shift them to reading a financial blog or book, it would make a WORLD of difference

    • I checked out your site and it is very well written. Yeah it is amazing what goes behind just putting out a simple post. And some do it 3x/wk (I’m limiting it to 1x/wk or I will drive myself insane). But it is definitely a great creative outlet for me. Definitely putting your blog on my daily check list. Has very pertinent info.
