#46: Why It’s So Hard to Give Up Work

If you have multiple streams of income, would you give up work?

I talked to many people and they want to be free from their jobs but it's really hard to give up work. Even I struggled to figure out why and I’ve narrowed it down to three things.

Now, let’s look at two things that we discussed in this episode:

  • Fear of the unknown
  • Loss aversion

Here’s a breakdown of how this episode unfolds…

I found that that fear, to me actually it's really kept me back. It's kept me back from really exploring other things, from really creating my ideal life.

I'm not only a physician. I am an entrepreneur, I'm a father, a husband, I'm a family member, I'm a member of this community.

  1. I left my career 9 to 5 five years ago. I started some part time consultancies that I’ve kept up for the last five years to keep from having a jarring disconnect of going from a high visibility job to no work at all. Next month I plan to shut the consulting down and look for more volunteer work because I just don’t need the money and there are aspects of consulting I don’t like. The things I do like about consulting are having a generous expense account, travel, getting checks in the mail and rubbing shoulders with political and business leaders. But the pro’s no longer outweigh the con’s so its on to the next phase of my life.
